Flying in? Car rental is available at Edinburgh Airport, Glasgow Airport and Aberdeen Airport, so you can collect your car after landing and skip the queues for taxis and transfers. Airport pick-up makes sense for visitors heading straight out of the city, with fast routes to the Highlands, the coast and everywhere in between. Drop the car back at the terminal at the end of your trip and walk straight to check-in.

Car Hire from Scottish Train Stations

Arriving by rail? Our branches at Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central and Dyce put you behind the wheel within minutes of stepping off the train. Take the train up from London or elsewhere in the UK, then pick up a car for the parts of Scotland the railway does not reach.

Explore Scotland by Car

Scotland rewards drivers. Public transport covers the cities well, but a hire car opens up the rest of the country. From our Edinburgh and Glasgow branches you can reach Stirling, Perthshire, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs within the hour.

Push further north in your rental car for Glencoe, Fort William, Inverness and Loch Ness, or take on the North Coast 500 from Inverness, one of the world’s great road trips. From Aberdeen, the castles of Royal Deeside and the Speyside whisky distilleries are an easy drive.

Ferry routes to the Isle of Skye, Mull, Arran and the other islands welcome hire cars too, so check your rental terms and build the islands into your route.

Cars to Suit Every Trip

Our Scottish fleet covers every type of journey. Choose an economy or small car for city driving, an SUV for rural roads and family holidays, or a 7-seater when you are travelling as a group. For special occasions we also offer luxury and premium models.

If you need a vehicle for several weeks or months, our long-term car rental and subscription options bring the cost down significantly compared with standard daily rates.

Car Hire in Scotland FAQs

Do I need a car to explore Scotland?

Edinburgh and Glasgow are easy to enjoy on foot and by public transport, but for the Highlands, the islands, the coast and rural Scotland, a car gives you far more freedom. Many of the country’s best places sit well beyond the rail network.

Can I pick up in one Scottish city and drop off in another?

Yes. One-way rentals are available, so you can collect in Edinburgh and return in Glasgow or Aberdeen, or pick up in Scotland and drop off elsewhere in the Drivalia UK network.

A one-way fee applies when the return location differs from the collection location, based on where you drop off.

Can I take a hire car on ferries to the Scottish islands?

Yes, you can take your rental car to the Scottish islands by ferry. A fee of £60 plus VAT applies when the vehicle leaves the UK mainland, and roadside assistance covers the UK mainland only, so any recovery costs on the islands are your responsibility.

What do I need to hire a car in Scotland?

Drivers must be aged 21 to 85 and have held a full licence for at least 12 months, or 24 months if the licence was issued outside the UK, EU or Commonwealth.

You will need a credit card in the main driver’s name for the security deposit, or a debit card if you choose a zero excess package. International visitors should bring their passport or ID and proof of return travel, plus an International Driving Permit if their licence is not in English.

Drivers under 25 pay a young driver surcharge, with details shown during booking.
